Record water discharge levels from the Birpur barrage on the Kosi river in Supaul and the Valmikinagar barrage on the Gandak river in West Champaran have raised concerns of flooding in 14 districts. The threat of flooding is due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of rivers in north Bihar, including Nepal, and their own basins. Water discharge at Birpur increased from 4.80 lakh cusecs to 5.31 lakh cusecs by 2pm, while discharge at Valmikinagar rose from 3.84 lakh cusecs to 4.49 lakh cusecs. Kosi river joins the Ganga at Kursela in Katihar district, and Gandak river is north of Patna in Saran district, impacting Bhagalpur and Katihar the most. Precautionary measures are being taken, with the Supaul district administration urging people between the Kosi embankments to move to higher ground. The state's water resources department issued a high alert to district officials and engineers, cancelling their leaves. The Birpur barrage is expected to reach a discharge of 6.81 lakh cusecs, close to the highest discharge recorded 56 years ago. The Valmikinagar barrage is also expected to reach levels not seen in two decades. The 14 districts on high alert include Supaul, Saharsa, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, and Katihar due to the rising Kosi river.Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, Saran, Vaishali, and Samastipur are experiencing flooding from the overflowing Gandak river. Additionally, the Bagmati river is also causing serious flood concerns for Sitamarhi, Sheohar, and Muzaffarpur districts.
